Competitions

The Sandy hook Beach Patrol Sponsors two competitions each summer. The Sandy Hook Invitational Lifeguard Tournament and the Sandy Hook Five Mile Row.

 

The Sandy Hook Invitational Lifeguard Tournament usually takes place the first week of August. This tournament is by invitation only. Teams wishing to be added to the invitation list should contact lifeguard headquarters at 732-872-5894.

The tournament consists of the following six events:

IRONMAN One individual from each team will continuously complete a 250 yard swim, a 400 yard paddle and a one-half mile row

SWIM RELAY Each member of this three man relay will swim over a 250 yard course.

PADDLE RELAY Each member of this three man relay team will paddle a rescue board over a 400 yard course.

ROW RELAY Three individual rowers from each team will row a surfboat over a one-half mile course.

OCEAN RESCUE Two rescuers will swim out to a victim 150 yards off shore. Both rescuers and the victim will then be pulled back to the beach by two pullers. The rescuers must then carry the victim across the finish line.

SURF MEDLEY Each medley teams consist of 1 swimmer, 1 paddler, and 1 boat team; completing each respective course.

The Sandy Hook Five Mile Row is open to all teams and usually takes place during the third week of August. Information about the exact date can be received by calling Lifeguard Headquarters.

The two boat classes are as follows:

Division "A" National Class, 300 lb. minimum, boats will be weighed.
Division "B" Vandyne or Hankins

Course: ROW north 2 1/2 miles around a buoy and back south across start/finish line.

Time: Check-in 7:00AM Race at 8:00AM sharp
